Suckling the Mender

I tell you the story
as I was told
there is a needle in the darkness
and light came through it
it threads the needle
but you who try to use it
to do good with the light
to stitch sense
piece the cloth together
it slips out
you sew with nothing
you baste leaves of darkness to leaves of darkness
you cannot find the thread again
though it is light
itself
it is everywhere
your fingers cannot grasp it
a few dapples
land on your fingertips
then dance off
you were good those moments
you held the needle
in your fingers
like a monkey in an experiment
filmed by someone
at the back of your head
in the proverb later
you even stick the needle
in your eye
then hope to die
