Artificial Intelligence

The term implies there is a genuine article
and we are it. The paragon must be five
paltry senses that only vaguely understand each other,
wired together into a sort of bickering council.
Because our say-so reality closes us in,
closes us under itself like a bell jar
so clear we can no longer even see it,
because we die in that protectorate of the senses,
we believe past any rational leap that nothing,
no one will ever get past us. Evolution broke the mold.
It is the most artificial intelligence anyone could imagine.

The Amoeba

I am soaking in a kind of solution
like a world. A kind of “I” is soaking,
doing something like, in a sort of world
of likeness. A world made up of likenesses
that talk among themselves. A likeness world.
How alike I am is just how real. I am soaking
in a kind of solution like words. The words
are there, but there is something more. That jelly
of besides might be the real thing. But I can only
cipher it, race towards it through more liquid doors
of liquid likenesses. Every time I think of the world, a fissure
occurs between me and it. I’m multiplied. I’m more words,
protoplasm. I ooze towards the truth and some part of me
that broke off might get there. But it will never know
that some thing like me started the process. The memory
that goes forth is only a simulacrum of a self,
and it finds my primitive speech something extraneous
to my animal, something to forget. I am on equal
footing with the pseudopodia of the amoeba
when it comes to the inner writer’s opinion of me:

“tl;dr” said the DNA to the organism.

After Philip K. Dick

I brought in an agency to study my agency.
I had to hire from outside, “off the street”
so to speak. I had to fill these chairs
with otherness. How can I trust these strangers
to represent the agency I think of as mine?
I worry about the foreign interest problem.
I wanted my business to run smoothly as the Cogito,
in a cool circle. What if I told you my business
is recycling my business, and that’s all we do here?
We never need to open or close the doors.
We never gain new employees or lose one to attrition.
We break down the formulas, furniture and other infrastructure
and produce new offices daily from that. Growth
is the least of our worries, since it’s entropy’s best friend.
Ever since we shut our doors forever, business is booming.

The Tree Experiment

Is silence irrelevant to a tree?
It grows in birdsong or the absence of.
We can’t help but feel it probably enjoys
a gentle storm that soaks its corrugated skin
and feeds its gnarly roots. The talls ones seem to appreciate
rain quietly, like old men. We’re hopelessly anthropomorphic
in our thought. What if a tree scientist, a dendrologist,
grew a tree in absolute silence, placed it
in an anechoic chamber with only a skylight
on permanent mute or artificial light? What if a tree
was sentenced to live like that? It somehow hurts
to think about it. But, you said, that poor tree
would still have the sound (sound is feel) of itself,
the growing, dying. Wait. How would they water it
without any sound? That would be otherness, you said.
Microtubules, I explained. Oh, this poem is sick,
you said.  I know. This is really about terrifying ourselves,
I admitted. I hate to want to think of the tree,
but I do. I said. Like so many other things.
I think that’s the divine, she said. It intrudes,
and it has a sound, no matter what.
