Halloween and Daylight Savings Time

Fete a cerebration: the dead return,
but famished, doorbell to doorbell.
A carved head glows from inside,
so we carve an hour from the night
to feed to darkness. Somehow
this makes our light show up earlier.
Colder, more answerable,
and we like this. We can fix
the stars, we think,
by cheating
this way.

Flame-Retardant Costume

So many in prison are there because they were
who they weren’t, hid behind a mask, carried a bag
for others to fill, wore a costume that commissioned
from them certain acts. Now, they must start the game
all over again to survive. Every day is Halloween
on the inside. The trick or treating never ends.
